Update on Flooding in Fonkio Kunda, Lower River Region

Continuous heavy rainfall on 7th July 2025 has led to the overflow of nearby water bodies around Fonkio Kunda, in Jarra West District. The resulting flash floods have caused significant damage:
– 19 households affected
– 8 families completely displaced, as their homes are now uninhabitable due to extensive water damage
– 11 households have suffered partial damage to buildings and loss of essential belongings

We stand in solidarity with all families impacted by this event. Displaced households are currently seeking temporary shelter with relatives and neighbors.

The Governor, accompanied by stakeholders, visited the affected households to assess the extent of the damage. He encouraged all partners to support and collaborate with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) to ensure a timely and coordinated response.

The NDMA regional office, under the Governor’s leadership and in close collaboration with The Gambia Red Cross Society and local authorities, has deployed teams to conduct a rapid assessment of immediate needs. Urgent assistance is required to help affected families recover and rebuild. Priority needs identified include:
✅ Shelter
✅ Food supplies
✅ Sanitation materials

NDMA remains committed to working alongside partners and communities to reduce vulnerabilities and strengthen resilience.

We urge all stakeholders, humanitarian partners, and individuals who can assist to coordinate support through the NDMA Lower River Region office.
